All Onset's a stage: Actors bring the Bard to the Band Shell

The Bard of Avon is coming to Onset.

Buzzards Play Productions will be putting on a production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" on July 28, 30, and August 4-6 at the Band Shell in Onset Village. The shows are free to attend.

"All the major metropolitan areas seem to have outdoor Shakespeare. It seems to be a beacon of culture," said Director Dan Groves. "I think it says a lot about a community that rallies behind the arts."

Onset may not be a major or metropolitan area, but travel down Cape Cod in the summer and there's no shortage of theater productions, both indoor and outdoor.

Groves points out that the history of Cape Cod is rich with art: From writers such as Tennessee Williams and Edna St. Vincent Millay, to painters such as Edward Gorrey and Edward Hopper, the Cape has served as a place for physical vacations and artistic gestation for a long time.

"The community built up around the art community," Groves said of Cape Cod. "We think the same thing can happen in Wareham."

Groves said that the Onset Bay Association welcomed Buzzards Play Productions with open arms when the nonprofit inquired about bringing Shakespeare to Onset.

"We think the best way to revitalize the community," Groves says, "is through the arts."
