Gatemen named Cape League All-Stars
The Wareham Gatemen will be sending four players to the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game, making them the cream of the crop even amongst the nation's foremost college ballplayers.
"I'm really excited," said second-baseman Tino Lipson from the University of California Davis. Lipson says that he had a rough season to start off, with a hamstring injury slowing him down, but he's back on his game and ready to make an impression at the all-star game.
"It was tough getting hurt at the beginning," said Lipson. "If I get one at-bat, I'll make the best of it."
Bradley Roney, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Southern Mississippi, says that although the Gatemen have been losing more than they're winning this year for a number of reasons, he's come away learning a lot from competing against the best college players out there.
"Our season's been kind of slow, not winning a lot of games, but that's not what it's all about," said Roney. "What I've learned so far this season is what's helped me be successful in this league."
Roney says that the summer schedule is tough combined with the college season.
"Up here, we've basically had two off days all summer," he explained, "so it's a grind."
Outfielder and left-handed pitcher Cole Sturgeon of the University of Louisville will be heading to the all-star game and says he's looking forward to "just having a good time."
Infielder Ethan Gross from the University of Memphis said that being sent to the Cape League is an honor in itself and going to the all-star game is simply icing on the cake.
"It's an honor to play with some of the best players in the nation."
