Help send the Tigers to Florida
The Wareham Tigers have less than a week to raise $40-$50,000 to travel to Florida for the Pop Warner National Championship if they win the final round of regionals this weekend.
B-squad coach Chris Perry, and parent of a player Nazih Elkallassi appeared before the Board of Selectmen during the citizen's participation portion of Tuesday's meeting to ask residents and local businesses to support the team in their fundraising efforts.
The team plans to marshal resources from parents and the Tigers organization but with coaches due in Florida Dec. 6, a lot of money needs to be raised quickly.
"In 1990 the Wareham Tigers won the New England...championship," but couldn't compete in Florida because they didn't have the money, according to Elkallassi.
Elkallassi suggested that the Town Administrator write a letter of support and send it to potential donors along with a team picture and score sheet.
"Send them to the Red Sox, send them to [Bob] Kraft, send them to the Celtics," Elkallassi implored them.
The board was supportive of this action.
Selectman Patrick Tropeano noted there is $7,000 tucked away in a CD account for the express purpose of funding a Tigers trip to Florida.
But there's still a whole lot of money to be raised in a short amount of time.
"With the time frame really being four days, you need to start today," said Selectman Alan Slavin.
Donations may be sent to Wareham Tigers PO Box 538 West Wareham, 02571. Checks may be made out the Wareham Tigers. For more information call Chris Perry at 508-315-7111.
