FOX 25 zips to Onset

Jul 16, 2010

The FOX 25 Morning News team, with hosts Kim Carrigan, Doug VB Goudie, and Gene Lavanchy, zipped to Onset last Friday as part of its weekly "Zip Trip" feature.

The team spoke to Town Administrator Mark Andrews, Onset Bay Association President Mary Lou Payton, members of the Wareham Gatemen, as well as business owners and residents, highlighting many of the great things to see around town.

The trip "showcase[d] the tremendous natural resources and the prime destination location" that Onset is, said Town Administrator Mark Andrews, adding that he was impressed with the number of people who showed up at Onset Pier at 7 a.m. to greet FOX 25.

Excited viewers held FOX 25 signs to grab the attention of the hosts. Village businesses celebrated by hanging Zip Trip signs in storefront windows. Onset Bay Trading Company owner Deborah Alfonso even created special t-shirts for the occasion, which read: "A taste of the Cape without the wait. Entering Onset, MA 02558."

"It's a great day out here," Alfonso said. "This is exciting!" She said the shirts were selling very well due to all the excitement, and the bright red color stood out in the sea of people.

Kenny's Salt Water Taffy was featured as a must-visit location in Onset, viewers learned a bit about the history of Wickets Inn, and the hosts spoke with Thermometer Man Dick Porter, curator of Onset's Porter Thermometer Museum. Local restaurants Marc Anthony's Pizzeria, Lindsey's, and Bailey's Surf-n-Turf were profiled in the "Taste of the Town" portion of the show.

"I'm very excited about the exposure," said Community Events Committee chair Susan Ricci. She hoped the show would generate traffic to upcoming events in Wareham and Onset, such as the following day's Illumination Night and Lantern Festival, and the Blues Festival on August 7.

And residents were happy to see Onset garnering some recognition, too.

"I think it's great for Onset ... to be acknowledged for the good that it has in it," said resident Hope Enos. "There's a lot to see that people don't realize."
