Lady Vikings take down Case with a big second half
The girls basketball team improved to 6-3 on the year with a 61-52 victory over Case Friday night.
With the game tied 23-23 at halftime, the Lady Vikings turned on the pressure in the second half. Wareham started the third quarter on a 10-3 run and never looked back
Coach Dave Brogioli said senior point guard Breanna Muir played a big part in the team's turn-around second half.
"The team goes with her. When she's playing well and has a good attitude, the team follows. We feed off of her energy," he said.
Brogioli said Muir, who scored nine of her 11 points in the second half, was more aggressive getting to the basket in the second half and opened up the floor for her teammates.
Two of those teammates were sophomore center Kia Fernandes and senior guard Gina Mendes, who combined for 22 points in the second half and 34 overall. Fernandez finished with a game-high 18 points.
Brogioli also credited senior guard Amber Filkins and her 15 points with a big role in the win.
Filkins scored nine points in the first half and went seven for seven from the free-throw line to keep Wareham in the game.
"We missed some chip shot layups in the first half and finally started hitting some in the second half," Brogioli said.
He added, "We needed a win after losing to Bourne. The game was frustrating early, but we didn't lose our composure and everybody stepped up."
The girls carry a 6-2 conference record into their next SCC game at Apponequet on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
