DID YOU KNOW?
The Wareham Historical Society owns the One Room Schoolhouse and the Union Chapel located on Main Street near the Methodist Meetinghouse. Did you know that both buildings were moved to Main Street from their original locations in town?
Schoolhouse # 6 was originally built on Great Neck in 1825. One of the town’s original eleven schools, it served the children in that area of Wareham for 100 years. In 1825, the school committee was reduced from nine members to three in an effort to be more efficient. Those members were Jared Pratt, Curtis Tobey, and William Fearing. The total school budget that year was three hundred dollars. The school was moved to its present location by the Historical Society in the 1970s.
The Union Chapel was built about 1880 by the residents of Great Neck and served as a non-denomination place of worship particularly when the weather made it difficult to travel to Wareham Center. Moved to its current location in 1997, the Chapel contains the original list of subscribers, known as the Union Chapel Association of Great Neck, and the donations each contributed toward the cost of the building. The Chapel is currently available for rental and residents still hold wedding ceremonies there. These buildings will be open to visitors during the Summer of Celebration 2014.
