Middle school teacher opens CrossFit 'box'
Wareham CrossFit owner Jen Crimaldi is going to pump you up.
CrossFit is an exercise company that has become popular over the last several years, involving weight lifting, box jumping, medicine ball throwing and jump roping. Despite the YouTube videos that make one sweat from just viewing them, CrossFit exercises can be made to fit anyone’s fitness.
“We want to show everyone can do CrossFit. You can be 70 years-old, or you can be 16 years-old,” Crimaldi said. “Everything is scalable.”
Because anyone can do CrossFit, Crimaldi opened the gym, called a "box," at 3065 Cranberry Highway.
“Everyone in Wareham has been so friendly, and I said, ‘I really want to bring something to the entire community,’” Crimaldi said.
Though she lives on the cape currently, Crimaldi has always been appreciative of the town since she was hired as a middle school teacher seven years ago. As major changes in Crimaldi’s life have taken place, she felt now was the time to open the gym.
“My father passed away a year ago. My daughter is in college. I asked, ‘what better time than the present,” Crimaldi said.
“It’s almost filling a bit of an emptiness,” Crimaldi said. “This is almost my child in a sense: giving birth to it, seeing it grow, nurturing it and making sure I take the right path with it.”
Taking the right path can be a challenge. There is the cliché that nine out of 10 businesses fail, and Crimaldi is aware of it.
“To be honest with you, I have the fear of failure, but in the end, I’ll be okay with it,” Crimaldi said. “I do want it to be a success, and I have a lot of wonderful, smart people around me.”
“If nothing else, I have taken the right path.”
Crimaldi will be facing competition in Wareham.
“There’s already Seaside CrossFit in West Wareham, so I got a little, ‘Oh my God, am I going to be able to pull this off?’ I’ve heard fabulous things about them, but I really wanted to do this,” Crimaldi said.
Crimaldi is not competitive towards Seaside CrossFit.
“Us CrossFit-ers all have the same goal. Their goal for their clients is the same goal I have for mine. We want to bring fitness and health to the community,” Crimaldi said.
Crimaldi knows the struggle of being healthy. Seven years ago, she weighed 262 pounds. Since then, she has lost 100 pounds and kept it off. For the last two years, she has done this through CrossFit.
“In today’s weight loss world, a lot of people will lose weight, but then gain it back,” Crimaldi said. “For me, food has been one of the struggles in my life.”
