Gatemen eliminate Bourne, face Cotuit today

Aug 5, 2010

The Gatemen have moved on to the second round of the playoffs, defeating the Bourne Braves in eleven innings and stifling the Braves' late-inning comeback.

Fresh off a 9-5 comeback victory in the first game of the best-of-three series at Bourne, the Gatemen hosted the Braves at Spillane Field.  Josh Urban took the mound for the Gatemen and held the Braves scoreless for 7 innings, while the Gatemen accumulated two runs.

But in the top of the eighth, the game got exciting, Kenny Ferrer couldn't keep the Braves scoreless, as they tied the game.   Despite bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th, the game went to extra innings.  Both teams had chances, and Keith Bilodeau pitched himself out of a jam in the top of the 11th.   But in the end it was the Gatemen's LJ Mazzilli who drove in the game winner, a hit over the centerfielder's head with the bases loaded in the top of the 12th.

Bilodeau got the win, and Urban and Mazzilli were named players of the game.

The Gatemen will next travel to face Cotuit on Monday at 3 p.m.   Game two is scheduled for Spillane on Tuesday.
