Oyster-fest organizers are prepping for a 'raw-cous' occasion
With less than a week left for preparations for the first annual Wareham Oyster Festival, organizer Bob Brady said that things are shaping up well, though there’s still some work left to be done.
“We’re down to crunch-time and have a lot of people to manage,” said Brady, who is president of the Wareham Village Association, the group responsible for putting on the event. He noted that there will be around 25 or 26 vendors to organize for Sunday’s Main Street event, including several who will be shucking-up some oysters for the public to enjoy.
As for the Oyster Festival Gala scheduled for Friday evening, Brady said they’ve gotten a great response, but they’re still in the process of cleaning up the historic Tobey Memorial Library on High Street. “We’re doing our Gala in the old memorial library, which hasn’t been utilized in several years. That requires certain local signatures and inspections,” he said.
Brady said arrangements are also being finalized for the week's other events, including the Oyster Trail featuring 16 local restaurants in the week leading up to the event, and also for those at the Boys and Girls Club and Lindsey’s Family Restaurant on Thursday, as well as the Speaker Series featuring several oyster experts throughout the week.
And then, of course, is the Oysterfest itself on Sunday. Though work still remains on Main Street from the third phase of the ‘Streetscapes’ project that’s blocked part of the road to traffic, Brady says he’s confident that the work won’t interfere with the event.
“We’ve been assured it will at least be cleaned up for the event itself,” he said. “There’s still going to be some [barrels, caution tape, etc. from the construction], but we’re going to hope to minimize it.”
Brady said that a majority of the work for the currently-active portion of the Streetscapes project is near the Wareham Fire Station and north of it, but the part of Main Street to be blocked off for the Oyster Festival will be from the opposite side of the station down to Irene’s House of Flowers.
“They’re going to have it as clean as possible so it looks good,” he said. “It will be nice to have all the litter cleaned off the street.”
