Voters approve new roof for high school

Wareham High School students will have a new roof over their heads in the near future.

Voters at night two of Town Meeting unanimously approved Article 13, which approved the borrowing of approximately $864,000 for the repair of the school’s leaky roof.

“The damage is evident with every rain storm,” said Sophomore Paige Fehskens, who along with fellow student Cam Decas presented a series of photos that showed damage to the roof as well as numerous examples of interior damage throughout the school.

“We want students at our school to be proud of what we call our home,” added Decas, who said that for the past five years or so since the roof has been leaking, the school has wasted money and time on repairs and patches. “The poor condition of the roof diminishes the student body’s pride.”

Last summer, the high school was one of six schools in the state that the Massachusetts School Building Authority chose for its "accelerated repair program," which reimburses districts for 68 percent of the cost of projects it approves.

That means the roof project, which is expected to cost no more than $2.7 million, could receive up to $1.8 in state aid, all of which was contingent upon voters approval of the article.

“If we don’t do this now, the $2.7 million—we will have to pay for the whole thing,” said Finance Committee Chairman Larry McDonald prior to the vote, noting that the town wouldn’t be borrowing any money for the project until 2016 at the earliest. “The $864,000 is going to cost a lot less and we can spread it out over 10 years.”

Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino said prior to Town Meeting that he expected the work (if approved) to take place in late summer/early fall.

Superintendent Kimberly Shaver Hood added that part of project would include repairs to the interior of the school as well.

The current roof of the building, which opened in 1991, is approaching 25 years old, and several officials noted that the life expectancy of it was only 20 years.
