Upper Cape Tech graduates told of their 'strong foundation'
Forty-nine Wareham students graduated as part of Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School's Class of 2014 on Sunday.
Upper Cape Principal Roger Forget began the ceremony for the 146 graduates and family, friends and alumni with a speech about building foundations for the future.
"The education you have received here at Upper Cape Cod Tech sets you apart from most high school graduates," Forget said. "The fact that you have succeeded both academically and vocationally makes you unique."
Forget noted a number of accomplishments by members of the senior class, including Wareham's Amelia Weare pitching a no-hitter as part of a perfect game, the first in Upper Cape Tech history.
"As you begin the next stage of your journey, go boldly ahead knowing you can draw on the foundation you have gained at your time here at Upper Cape Tech," he said.
Valedictorian Rachel Bordieri drew on a recent article she read entitled, "Dear graduates, just breath."
She said that, while everyone is looking toward the future at graduation, it's also nice to just enjoy the day. Quoting from the article, she said, "On commencement day you'll wear a gown and maybe for the first time fit right in with everyone around you. Total strangers will wish you well. With every movement, a tassel will kiss your cheek."
"Take everything that is thrown your way one step at a time and remember, we hold the key to our future," Bordieri said. "As long as you believe in yourself, you will do great things."
Upper Cape Tech Superintendent Charles Dutch closed the ceremony with a speech talking about the four cornerstones of an Upper Cape Tech education -- courage, freedom, community and perseverance -- and echoed Forget's point about building strong foundations.
"Without a strong foundation, the most well-built building will eventually collapse," Dutch said. "By graduating from Upper Cape Tech today, you have laid a truly strong foundation going forward."
Dutch said that the graduating students can build any life they can imagine with their foundation from Upper Cape Tech. He closed with a quote from the Spanish philosopher George Santayana: "The loftiest edifices need the deepest foundations."
