Post #220 eliminated from postseason with loss to top-seeded Barnstable
Though the team made a good run, the fifth-ranked Wareham Post #220 American Legion baseball team was eliminated by top-seeded Barnstable on Monday night by a score of 5-0 in the semi-final of the District 10 post-season tournament.
The game saw Barnstable's starting pitcher Dan Holzman take a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning. Wiley Knight (Tabor Academy) of Post #220 broke up a no-hitter with one out in the top of the seventh inning, but Holzman kept everyone off balance as he showed great command of the strike zone all night.
Tom Cummings (Upper Cape) pitched well to give Post #220 a chance by only allowing four earned runs against Barnstable’s hitters, but it wasn’t enough.
“It was a pleasure to coach such a great group of young men,” said Head Coach Keith Delgado. “They showed up every night to compete the right way on the baseball field.”
Led by the team’s four captains—Chris Carando, Tyler Ferdinand, Brett Labonte, and Luke Mattar—Post #220 was able to put together a successful season, as they finished the regular season with a record of 15-7 and made it to the semifinal against Barnstable after wins against Plymouth (11-6) and East Bridgewater (3-2).
