High School weight room to remain at old Boys and Girls club

The Wareham High School weight room at old Boys and Girls Club building on Viking Drive will stay put for at least another year according to Town Administrator Derek Sullivan

WCTV had been interested in moving into that building by the end of the suumer, but Sullivan said Monday that WCTV has recently decided to look at other options.

"We're sticking with the status quo," said Town Administrator Derek Sullivan. "There's nothing being moved at that building and nothing being moved with the seniors and the support day care program at this time."

Previously it was suggested the weight room be moved from the building on Viking Drive to the Multi-Service Center.

WCTV Executive Director Jay Heard expressed disappointment that the building would not be available to the cable access organization. Being “centrally located” next to schools and town government buildings would have been “advantageous” to WCTV and the community, he said.

Heard noted, however, that the old Boys and Girls Club was just one of several locations that the WCTV board has been exploring as an alternative to WCTV’s current, outgrown Old Town Hall quarters.

Selectman Stephen Holmes took issue with school using the town-owned building without approval from the Selectmen, citing the liability issues if a student was injured in the weight room.

"This situation here is not very good," he said. "We need to take a look at this arrangement here and figure this out. We need to make sure this is legitimate."

Sullivan said he is working with Wareham Schools Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood to make sure everything is being taken care of properly.
