Mini golf makes its return to Kool Kone
Anyone driving past Kool Kone this weekend might notice something different yet familiar. For the first time in more than 20 years there will be people playing mini golf outside the restaurant.
Kool Kone owner Tom Strom said the 18-hole course, after a year and a half in the making, will be open to the public at noon on Sunday, Aug. 17.
"It's going to be crazy. People have been calling me everyday asking when it'll open," said Strom.
There was previously a mini golf course next to Kool Kone, but Strom said it was closed in the late 1980s to build the restaurant's gravel parking lot.
"A lot of people used to golf here when they were kids and now they all have kids they can bring here," he said.
He said late last year the land became available behind the restaurant to build the course and "it worked out pretty good."
He previously said the project would cost $380,000 and was he able to raise $5,545 from over 90 people on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo.
Strom said the golf course is pretty basic right now but he wants to add to it and make it bigger with more attractions in the future. He said he would also like to put an arcade on the lot next year.
The course will be open the same times as Kool Kone, seven days a week, according to Strom, who also said lights were installed so people can golf at night. Admission to the course will be $7 for everyone.
Strom said while the course is opening on Sunday, Kool Kone will likely hold a grand opening event on Labor Day weekend.
