Plans for parking kiosk revenues
Town Administrator Derek Sullivan has outlined where he plans to allocate some of the revenues from the parking kiosk program. His plan centered on the maintenance of the kiosks, the maintenance of the Onset Pier and the expansion of the kiosk program.
"This is seeking to use the parking program funds to further establish the program," Sullivan said at Tuesday night's Selectmen meeting.
Sullivan will be asking Town Meeting voters to transfer funds from the revenues into the parking kiosk program to help further run the program.
He said the parking kiosks have brought in $138,000 in net revenues so far this fiscal year, exceeding expectations from the beginning of the summer.
Sullivan said he plans to set aside $14,000 for two new kiosks and hopes to eventually have a total of eight kiosks in the program.
"They can be placed essentially anywhere when it comes down to it," he said.
Although don't expect any kiosks in downtown Wareham.
Sullivan plans to set aside $50,000 in kiosk revenues to establish an account for Onset Pier maintenance.
"That is a large amount to put in there but we know we're talking about seven figures in future costs [in repairs to the pier]."
He said with that money the town could begin to put together enough funds to start looking for matching grants down the road.
Sullivan also planned to use funds for maintenance of the kiosks themselves. He said he would like to establish a cache of parts for the machines that the town currently doesn't have.
He said $20,000 would be set aside for area maintenance, including but not limited to signage, road striping and fixing the lots themselves. He used the example of a crater that formed in the Temple Lot on Union Avenue last year as something the revenues could pay for.
"If these areas are earning funds they should pay for themselves for the maintenance," said Sullivan.
Other money could be spent on seasonal enforcement officers who would go throughout the entire parking program area, including the permit parking sections in Onset, enforcing the parking rules
