Civil War book collection up for auction at Wareham Library

Jan 11, 2015

A collector's item sure to draw the eye of any Civil War buff has marched its way into the Wareham Free Library this month.

Available in January's silent auction at the library is the three-volume set of "Lee's Lieutenants" written by Pulitzer Prize winning author Douglas Southall Freeman.

The three volumes were published between 1942 and 1944, and the first volume of the set is signed by Freeman. The collection is valued between $125 and $425.

The three-volume set of the history of Robert E. Lee’s officers is from the collection of John Wylde, a local historian. Wylde was a graduate of Harvard University, majoring in history, with a focus on the Civil War.

He also ran the Wareham Gatemen Baseball Organization for 25 years, and was inducted into both the Cape Cod Baseball League as well as the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The set was donated to the Friends of the Wareham Free Library by his widow, Patricia Wylde. Mrs. Wylde said that her husband loved Wareham and would have been proud to have contributed these volumes to help the Wareham Free Library, according to the Friends of the Wareham Free Library, who run the silent auctions every month.

The books are in fine condition, with portraits, drawings and maps of the people and places surrounding the conflict.

They are currently on display in the front of the library next to the circulation desk. Bids can be made until the end of the month.
