2015-16 school year to start Aug. 31
It’s official — following summer vacation, Wareham’s students will report to school on Aug. 31.
At the School Committee’s last meeting earlier this month, some committee members expressed concern over a proposed Aug. 27 start, leading to the vote being tabled until Wednesday night’s meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Kimberly-Shaver Hood said that after hearing the discussion at the last meeting, school officials went back and reworked the calendar proposal and decided on Aug. 31. The committee unanimously approved the proposal.
“I’ve spoken briefly with some people in the public and they like this better,” said School Committee member Michael Flaherty.
Shaver-Hood said that teachers would report to school on Aug. 26 and 27 for “contracted professional development.”
“For us to reschedule it would be virtually impossible,” she said.
Wareham started this school year on Tuesday, Sept. 2, the day after Labor Day. Of the other eight South Coast Conference schools, five started this school year on Tuesday, Aug. 26, while Dighton-Rehoboth, Freetown-Lakeville and Seekonk started on Sept. 3 and 4.
Shaver-Hood said the last day of school is scheduled June 27, 2016.
