Carlos F. Porrata, 66, Steamship Authority mechanic, Coast Guard veteran

Carlos F. Porrata, 66, of Onset, died Thursday, October 14, 2010 at his home after a brief illness. He was the husband of Sandra J. (Gonsalves) Porrata.

Born in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Carlos and Candida (Jimenez) Porrata.

After graduating from high school, Mr. Porrata enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard serving throughout the First District in Boston, Woods Hole, and Martha’s Vineyard. After his Coast Guard service, Mr. Porrata worked for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute as a diesel mechanic. A resident of Oak Bluffs, Mr. Porrata moved to Springfield in 1970, where he worked as a service representative for Pitney Bowes for 28 years. Moving to Onset in 1978, Mr. Porrata was again employed as a diesel mechanic for the Steamship Authority. He retired this past May.

An avid reader, he also enjoyed fishing, gardening and helping others.

Survivors include his wife; his son Carlos L. Porrata, of Henderson, NV; his daughter Yolanda Porrata, of Onset; his sisters, Gladys Padilla, Rebecca Bomano, and Belinda Montalbo-Ayala, all of Bronx, NY, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, the late Victor Angelo Jimenez.

His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham at 8 p.m. Relatives and friends may visit on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. prior to the service. Interment in the Mass. National Cemetery will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010 at 11 a.m.
