Elks hold Flag Day ceremony

Jun 15, 2015

"Heraldry is as old as the human race," said Raymond Rock, past exalted ruler of the Wareham/New Bedford Lodge of Elks, at the Lodge's Flag Day ceremony Sunday afternoon.

More than 230 years ago, the United States adopted our own flag. To honor this occasion, the Elks held a ceremony in front of their Lodge on Cranberry Highway.

About 100 people were in attendance as members of the Lodge spoke about the origins and various iterations of our nation's flag, from the Pine Tree flag used at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775 to the flag we use today.

Each of those flags were presented during the ceremony, which included color and honor guards from the Plymouth VFW Post, a 21 gun salute and concluding with the playing of "Taps."
