Dance for Alzheimer's awareness
Shake your booty for a good cause at a “Zumbathon” at the Wareham High School gymnasium this Sunday.
The fee to participate is $10, and 100% of the proceeds will go to benefit Alzheimer Disease Awareness. There is no registration required, and anyone who shows up can take part.
The event was organized by Liz Pothel Pereira. Pereira teaches Zumba, an aerobic workout that incorporates Latin dance and hip hop, at the Wareham YMCA. In the past, she has organized Zumbathons to raise scholarship money for the YMCA. When she saw many people in her personal life being affected by Alzheimer’s disease, she decided to Zumba for a new cause.
She recalled carrying her friend’s father, who suffered from Alzheimer’s into a wheelchair, and helping him into a van, noting “I just thought you lost your memory…I didn’t know it could affect someone that much.”
Pereira also works overnight as a corrections officer at Plymouth County Jail, so she decided to enlist the help of some of her Zumba students from the YMCA to help with things like fliers and phone calls. She has also brought in Zumba instructors from all over Massachusetts, which is a departure from past Zumbathons where she used only instructors from Wareham. According to her, with different instructors come different styles and enhance the experience.
The event will last for three hours and each participant will get a free bottle of water. There will also be a silent auction which will include a baseball signed by Roger Clemens.
