Alfred L. “Leroy” Gonsalves, 77
Alfred L. “Leroy” Gonsalves, 77, of Marion, passed away suddenly on Sunday, Aug. 30, at Tobey Hospital in Wareham after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Antonia “Tunie” Gonsalves of Wareham.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Adeline (Gonsalves) Pina and Joseph Gomes, Sr. A previous resident of Wareham for most of his life, he lived in Marion. Leroy worked in the construction field and also for Ocean Spray Cranberries and at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.
Leroy served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959. He was well known for driving around town in his Cadillac adorned with his “Leroy” license plate, ringing his bell and his humor. Leroy always knew how to make you smile everywhere and he was an avid customer at Shaw’s and Stop and Shop with his little scooter.
He is survived by his sons, Michael “Mycul Wayne” Gonsalves of Fall River, Alfred Gonsalves, Jr. of Wareham and Steven E. Gonsalves of Middleboro; his step-son, Gene A. Pina of New Bedford; his siblings, Benjamin Gomes and Eugenia “Gigi” Horton both of Brockton, Edward Gomes of Onset and Mary ‘Philly” Gomes of W. Wareham and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, the late John F. Gomes, Domingo Gomes, Joseph Gomes, Antone “Tony” Gomes and Robert Gomes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Sept. 11 at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne. Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.
A gathering will be held at the Dudley Brown VFW in Onset following the interment.
