Lady Bears shut-out Wareham Lady Vikings

Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational school's girls' volleyball team defeated Wareham 0-3 in Friday night's game, bringing the Wareham team's record 0-9 at the halfway point of the season.

Wareham's defensive play, however, was an impressive combination of hustle around the court and well-timed stuffs at the net that inspired rallies in the first two games, keeping the first two games' scores close.

The third game was a decisive win by the Greater New Bedford Vocational Lady Bears, but digs by freshman setter Jill Rawding, and blocks at the opposing attack line by junior Sara Tyma kept the match alive, making it difficult to finish off Wareham's Lady Vikings.

The Lady Vikings had fewer service errors than the Lady Bears. Wareham Coach Ben Kaeterle said he has started to see fewer mistakes at mid-season, and he's optimistic with young talent gaining experience, especially in freshman Rawding at setter, and freshman Emily Kaureanen playing libero.

“It's definitely a young group we have right now, in the last couple games we made a lot of mental errors, but I told them we get to face all these teams again,” Kaeterle said. “There were no attitudes tonight. The scrap and hustle was all over the place. The communication and fine-tuning could get a lot better, but that's going to come with experience.”

Senior captain Erica Trask said the team is “definitely improving."

"We got close some games, but we have yet to take one," Trask said. "I think we played good as a team. Our intensity kind of came in and out, but overall, we picked up our scrap and did well as a team together.”

With eight games left in the season, a streak of wins could keep the club in contention for the playoffs.

“I think we definitely have a chance at everybody as the season progresses,” Trask said. “There's no real standout in our league. It's up for the taking.”

The next match-up for the Lady Vikings is a home game on Monday at 6 p.m. against Apponequet.
