Wareham High School to hold college homecoming
Wareham High School students will get the chance to grill their peers about their college experiences at the high school’s annual college homecoming question and answer session Jan. 8.
High school Principal Scott Palladino said the school has hosted the session for several years, and that almost every senior attends. Seniors are given the opportunity to ask current college students anything they want to know about their college experiences, including what it is like to live on campus, and the academic rigor they face in college.
Overall, Palladino expects between 12 – 25 graduates to show up to the meeting. He said one of the first questions the seniors often ask is what surprised the college students the most.
“A lot of students live on campus, so it’s not an academic surprise, it’s a living surprise, whether it’s learning to balance a budget, or do laundry on their own,” Palladino said.
Throughout the years, Palladino said he has heard most of the college graduates who come back to the school say that the academic aspect of college is a cinch, which he attributes to the preparation they get at the high school.
“We are hearing they are very prepared,” Palladino said. “One kid said he was almost too prepared. He said his freshman year courses were too easy, since he took [advanced placement] courses at the high school.”
Palladino also said one of the biggest changes reported amongst the college students is the quality of social life in college. Whereas Wareham High School is a fairly tight-knit community, he said, colleges can be a little more free-form.
“It’s an affirmation of the climate we are trying to create here at the high school,” Palladino said.
