Scouts and families cheer on small cars at annual derby race
It was no Nascar race turnout, but the tiny cars that zoomed down a long track in St. Patrick’s Church Saturday afternoon were cheered on by an almost equally enthusiastic crowd.
The annual derby race was put on by Cub Scout Troop 39, whose members each created and raced their own small cars. Ages ranged from first graders to fifth graders, and racers competed in their own brackets within their respective packs.
Cars must go through inspections, before they may be entered into the race. Race leaders weigh each car and and measure the wheel lengths, to see if they meet regulation.
Spectators watched as the small cars flew down the track in the middle of the room, racetrack flags separating the “pit crew” from onlookers. There were several derby-themed refreshments available, including hot dogs fashioned in the shape of racecars.
The winners of the races were Andrew Forrest, Charlie Buckingham, Edwin Brown, Gavin Schulter, but each participant left with a medal to honor their work, even if they didn't win a race.
The first place winners can register for council regional derby, and if placed there they go into championship.
“We make sure all the kids leave with something to remember that they were here,” said Carolyn Santos, Pack 39 Committee Chair. “It isn't all about just the first place winners. That's what scouts is all about – the fun.”
