Cub Scout becomes one with the Boy Scouts, Force

Feb 29, 2016

Knighted with a "lightsaber," Cub Scout Jacob Fraser became one with the Boy Scouts at a special Blue and Gold Ceremony Saturday afternoon.

The 10-year old Webelo earned the Arrow of Light award at the ceremony in St. Patrick's Church. The award is the highest one a Cub Scout may earn, and shows he has completed all the requirements to become a Boy Scout.

The ceremony officially began when Scout Leader Kelly Buckingham, dressed as Princess Leia from Star Wars, led the scouts from the front doors of the building to the stage.

Standing on one side of a movable bridge with his parents Angie and Eric Fraser, Jacob Fraser crossed over the bridge and was knighted into the Boy Scouts with a blue loam lightsaber. Members of the Boy Scouts welcomed him to their troop by changing his neckerchief and hat. Though Fraser earned many badges as a Cub Scout, the Arrow of Light badge is the only one Fraser may wear on his uniform as a Boy Scouts.

To earn this award, Cub Scouts like Fraser have to complete four required adventures and three elective adventures. Required adventures include “Duty to God in Action” and “Building a Better World,” while electives range from “Adventures in Science” to “Movie Making.”

Other Cub Scouts earned awards and badges for their completed adventures. These badges reward the scouts for the projects they worked on for the entire year. Usually, a Blue and Gold Ceremony is held every February during Scouting Anniversary Week.

The entire ceremony was Star Wars themed, except for the lunch: salad, wings (no, not X-Wings), and spaghetti.

After the awards and Fraser's crossing over, Buckingham led many Star Wars-themed games, including “Keep the Balloon Up with Your Lightsaber.”

The ceremony ended with a dessert fundraiser where homemade desserts, all surrounding either a Cub Scouts or Star Wars theme, were auctioned off.
