House condemned after hazmat response

A medical call Tuesday morning prompted a level one hazardous material response to a single-story home on Daniel Road. After a sweep, the response team found no hazardous materials, however, the Board of Health will condemn the property.

Wareham EMS notified Wareham Fire District officials of potentially dangerous conditions inside the home after a man was removed and transported to Tobey Hospital.

“He allegedly suffered from chemical burns,” said Fire Chief Robert McDuffy. “The team is investigating to make sure there’s nothing dangerous inside that could cause someone entering the home a problem.”

A level one hazardous material response is the lowest level of response, indicating that a risk assessment of a suspicious substance is required.

The response team cleared the scene at 1:51 p.m. Wareham health officials, the town’s building inspector and electrical inspector were on the scene for the investigation.

McDuffy said the effort included assistance from multiple agencies, including Onset, Bourne, Middleboro, Pembroke, New Bedford and Yarmouth.
