Teachers report Wareham science classes rank high nationally

Two teachers that attended the National Science Teachers' Association conference brought to light just how advanced Wareham's programs are by putting the school system into perspective with others across the nation during the School Committee's meeting on Wednesday night.

“My feeling of being above and ahead of the game kind of caught me off guard,” said Sue Taber, a seventh grade science and STEAM teacher. “We had teachers from all over the country and the world that were interested in what we were doing.”

Taber explained teachers travelled to Nashville, Tennessee from March 31 to April 3 to attend the conference; take part in “Meet Me in the Middle,” a roundtable discussion featuring topics related to science; and take in many sessions that encompassed all levels.

The teachers presented Innovation Day from several years ago and Eco-Product that began last year. Innovation Day Eco-Product is a program that allows students to design and plan sustainable marketable products.

“Clearly if we can improve our practice of education by going to conferences, I think we're moving in the direction,” said School committee member Geoff Swett. “We're asking: Okay what works and how can we replicate it in Wareham?”
