Onset Fire's new truck dubbed 'Water Dragon' after contest

Meet the “Water Dragon,” Onset’s newest firetruck, which earned its name courtesy of a Minot Forest Elementary third grader.

Christine Quimby’s third grade class won a pizza party and a visit from the fire department in its new truck on Wednesday. Student Patrick Tripp submitted the winning entry in a contest hosted by the Onset Fire Department.

Quimby invited Heidi DiGiovanni’s class to join the party that included tours of the new truck.

When the department needed a name for the station's latest addition, Bill Lockwood, chair of the Fire Department Building Committee, decided a contest should settle the matter.

All students from grades one to four could submit names. The fire department received nearly 200 entries.

“[The Building Committee] tried to keep it pretty open for the students,” said Fire Chief Ray Goodwin. “We reviewed all the names and chose from there.”

Some names that came close but ultimately didn't make the cut included: “Red Rescue Rocket,” “Magic Fire,” “The Red Flag,” “Red Devil,” “Big Red” and “Heroes on High.”

“It was a contentious debate for the five of us,” said Goodwin. “It was a bunch of good names.”
