The Wareham Historical Society will celebrate Capt. John Kendrick Day from 1 to 4 p.m. on June 18 at 100 Main St.

Kendrick, who called Wareham home, was the first American to officially attempt trade with Japan in 1791.

Author Scott Ridley, who recently discovered information about Kendrick’s arrival in Japan, will discuss his new book following a presentation.

This year marks the 225th anniversary of the event. Kendrick was a privateer during the American Revolution and financed the first school in Wareham.
