Wareham firefighters help battle 100-acre brush fire on Cape Cod
Wareham firefighters were among crews from eight towns that beat back a brush fire in Sandwich that burned approximately 100 acres Saturday into Sunday. As of Sunday, the fire had not yet been extinguished.
According to State Police, the Sandwich Fire Department and the Department of Conservation and Recreation called for assistance at 10 a.m. Saturday as the fire began to spread.
Wareham Fire Chief Robert McDuffy was not immediately available for comment.
The fire broke out on Joint Base Cape Cod, which was formerly known as Otis Air Force Base.
Massachusetts State Police and the Army National Guard fought the blaze with helicopters used to drop water pulled from Snake Pond, located in Sandwich.
The State Police Airwing had one helicopter assisting with fire fighting using Bambi Bucket water drops. The Airwing was tasked with assistance in dousing hot spots with its 120 gallon capacity bucket. The National Guard had three Blackhawk helicopters fighting the fire using 600 gallon buckets. Water drops were halted Saturday at dusk and resumed Sunday morning.
The drops will continue until the fire is out. State Police report that Route 6 in Sandwich had minimal traffic impact from the smoke and fire.
Currently, no injuries have been reported due to the fire and no structures were damaged.
