Incumbent Susan Williams Gifford wins re-election
Susan Williams Gifford (R-Wareham) has won the race to keep her seat as the state representative for the 2nd Plymouth District, winning majorities in all three district towns.
“To see such an overwhelming victory where we were able to win every precinct in the district, it really is an affirmation of the work that I’ve done,” said Gifford, who was first elected in 2002. “I can’t say enough how much I appreciate the votes of support from so many people across Wareham, Middleboro and Carver.”
Gifford earned 11,797 total votes in those towns compared to challenger Sarah Hewins of Carver’s 8,593 total votes.
Over the summer, Hewins campaigned hard for the seat, holding meet and greets in all three towns and challenging Gifford’s record. A last minute campaign mailer sent out by the Massachusetts Republican State Committee questioned Hewins’ ethics. For the complete story, click here.
Gifford said that she would continue to serve residents, despite what her opponent said about her during the campaign.
“Sarah spent a lot of time trying to tell people that they should be unhappy with the level of service they were getting from me at the State House. This vote shows that she was wrong and I am very appreciative for the strong showing of support,” said Gifford. “Her message was rejected in every corner of the 2nd Plymouth District.”
Hewins said she was disappointed with the loss, but hoped the race would push her opponent to work harder for district residents.
“I ran for the people of this district...and I told Ms. Gifford on the phone that I sincerely hope she will now be a better representative.”
