Firefighters do the opposite, setting up a fire for a good cause
Sunday's chilly weather really put the "cold" in "Cold for a Cause," an initiative by the Onset Fire Department to raise money and food for Damien's Food Pantry.
For two days straight, from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, firefighters stood on the corner of Main Ave. and Cranberry Highway, manning a fire and accepting donations for the food pantry.
"I'm cold. I want to go home," said Rich Sniger, a firefighter from the department.
Derek Fortes from the Box 5 Association -- a group of retired Onset firefighters and their families and friends -- agreed.
"It'll be nice to get inside of a warm house and take a shower and just relax," he said. "At the end of the day, it was for a great cause and that's how we look at it."
Sniger, Fortes, and Scott Draper manned the fire, which was contained in an old steel oil drum, throughout the days. They went home for only four or six hours in the entire 48 hours of the cause.
Others from Box Five Association joined them here and there, roasting marshmallows and chatting while keeping warm.
According to Fortes and Sniger, many people donated money to the cause.
Local restaurants Lindsey's and Bailey's regularly donated food for the firefighters while Dunkin Donuts provided coffee and donuts.
Home Depot donated a grill for the cause, which was raffled off.
Damien's Food Pantry is located on 3065 Cranberry Hwy. and is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The pantry provides perishable and non-perishable items to families in need.
