Onset VFW hosts more than 100 guests during annual Christmas dinner

"Come empty-handed and hungry, leave with food and clothes" could've been the slogan for the annual Christmas dinner held at the bunker, where more than 100 seniors, veterans, and people in need came for a meal.

Guests shopped for clothes donated by the community, picked out canned goods, and enjoyed a traditional Christmas dinner at the Onset Veterans of Foreign War Bunker.

The community came together to make the dinner possible: donations of food and decorations from local businesses, and hours of preparation and hosting from volunteers.

For veterans Al Berry and Jim Dandy, the dinner was a way to celebrate Christmas and getting out into the community.

"The food was so great, I'd come back again," Berry said.

Lynn Spinola, one of the organizers, said she was very happy and impressed with the turnout.

"We had more people take clothes home than the canned food we had, but we could donate the rest to Damien's Food Pantry," she said.

Dinner was served plate-by-plate and prepared in the kitchen of the VFW and several different kinds of dessert lined the tables for taking. Even Santa was there, handing out presents. Dozens of take-home boxes went with the guests, some of whom came and left on the GATRA bus, paid for by the VFW.
