Teachers at Wareham’s John R. Decas Elementary school are offering “golden tickets” to four lucky students every month.

These tickets might not come with a tour of a magical chocolate factory, but they do bring their winners a golden certificate, a golden pencil, their photo on the award bulletin board, and entry of their names into Decas School’s “Golden Book.”

To win a golden ticket at Decas all they need to do is embody Decas Elementary’s motto: “responsible, respectful, safe.”

One student from each grade will win a golden ticket every month, plus an additional student recommended by the school’s specialist.

Assistant Principal Bethany Chandler explained that the idea for the award came about as the school was attempting to find a way to incorporate “Positive Behavioral Incentive” into the curriculum.

Decas Principal Donna Noonan already kept a golden book in her office which held the names of students who had done good deeds. Chandler thought it would be a good idea to make the book more public, making it an incentive for the students to behave well.

The initial winners of the Golden Book Award are:

Kaylee Ormston, grade two

Olivia Mello, grade two

Brycen Mobilia, grade one

Caia Cooke, kindergarten
