Put 'em up! Wareham Police dish out high fives to students
Wareham Police enthusiastically put the “five” in “five-o” Friday morning at Decas Elementary and Minot Forest School.
Wareham was one of 38 cities and towns across southeastern Massachusetts that participated in “High Five Fridays.” The community outreach program aims to build trust between police and students as officers greet students with high fives as they arrive at school. School administrators embraced the idea after Wareham Police approached them with the offer.
“The event was truly satisfying and overwhelming for the involved officers, and we so much appreciated the enthusiasm shown by the students and faculty of Minot Forest and Decas School,” said Police Chief Kevin Walsh.
At Decas Elementary, students were delighted to see the officers. Some students even offered to teach the officers some new moves, such as the “gearshift,” “dolphin” and “turkey” – all variations on the traditional high five.
Minot Forest Students were also glad to see the police as many dashed out of cars and busses to greet the officers.
“We were very happy to host Wareham’s finest today,” said Principal Joan Seamans. “They gave the students an awesome feeling.”
One Minot student, Isabel Rasmussen, expressed her gratitude.
“Thank you for keeping us safe,” she told the officers after her high five.
