Members of Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School’s Class of 2017 tossed their caps in the air this Sunday, celebrating the completion of their high school education.

The school’s largest graduating class, 166 students crossed the stage to receive their diplomas.

Lana Nguyen of Wareham was chosen as this year’s Outstanding Vocational Student of the Year and spoke at the graduation ceremony, along with valedictorian Amber DiBona of Bourne.

“From my perspective on the stage, seeing the smiles on the faces of the students, you could tell it was something they were excited and happy about,” said Superintendent Robert Dutch.

The 950 seats set up for the audience were filled, Dutch said, and another 600 supporters were standing, providing a graduation ceremony with “a lot of energy.”

The Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School opened its doors in 1969 and offers more than a dozen technical programs, from carpentry to cosmetology to marine technology. Around 740 students currently attend the school, coming from Bourne, Falmouth, Marion, Sandwich and Wareham.

“It’s very rewarding to see the work we all do culminate in this wonderful event,” said Lissa Magauran, the Marion representative on the school committee. “This was a class with a lot of personality...they seemed tightly-knit and supportive of each other.”

Next year, the technical school will offer a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning program. It received a grant from the state for $300,000 to purchase equipment for this program, according to Dutch.
