Field day supplies fun, friends, 5th grade farewell

Beanbag tosses, trampolines and a robust softball game marked this year’s fifth grade field day celebration.

The Wareham Middle School’s fifth grade field day was an all-day event Wednesday, allowing students to get out their extra energy after finishing their testing.

Students could participate in a 50-yard dash, obstacle courses, relay races, softball, Frisbee and a mile run called “the marathon.” There were around 180 fifth graders on the Wareham Middle School track playing games or sitting on blankets cheering on friends.

“Some of the students don’t shine academically, so it’s nice to see them excel on the field,” said Kristen Kelly, who has been a teacher at the middle school for four years.

The students were enthusiastic to compete, despite the lack of sun and the wet grass.

“I love that everyone’s always cheering for each other,” said fifth grade student Emerson Femino. “I like getting to be outside all day.”

The rest of the middle school classes will also hold their field day events this week, with the sixth grade on June 8 and seventh grade June 9.
