Wareham Housing Authority honors former commissioner Rudy Santos

Aug 9, 2017

The Wareham Housing Authority memorialized recently deceased commissioner Rudy Santos on Wednesday afternoon by naming the Agawam Village Community Center in his honor.

“He gave everything to the town and the authority,” said Chair Bob Powilatis. “He was instrumental in helping transform Agawam Village into quality, affordable housing.”

Powilatis noted that Santos, along with himself and commissioner Bill Lockwood, were elected as commissioners in 2013. At the time, the affordable housing complex for seniors was in a state of disrepair “both financially and physically,” according to Powilatis.

Since then, Santos helped secure funding to replace siding, remove asbestos, upgrade plumbing and install generators. In addition to his work with the authority, Santos served on the Community & Economic Development Authority and helped lead the planning effort for Wareham’s Summer of Celebration in 2014, which commemorated the town’s 275th anniversary.

In his honor, commissioners had a plaque made up and hung it in the community center at the end of their meeting.

Santos was a sitting commissioner when he passed away on Aug. 4. Powilatis said commissioners will put a notice out to residents of Agawam Village and Redwood Park (which is also run by the authority) seeking someone to fill the vacancy.

Commissioner Donna Bronk said the board is searching for “somebody the community will be proud to have representing them.”
