Onset Beautification Committee presents fresh, repaired gazebo

After running into walls for years (though gazebos have none), the Onset Beautification Committee is putting the finishing touches on the repairs to the gazebo in Onset.

The gazebo, perched on the bluffs overlooking Onset Beach, is at least 100 years old, said Kathy Judd, a member of the Onset Beautification Committee. Though it needed a lot of work, the gazebo is "structurally sound" and was worth preserving, Judd said.

Work on the gazebo began in April with electrical replacements, and through the summer improvements continued: a new roof, a fresh coat of paint and replacement of the rotted wood on the gazebo. The gazebo is also now lit at night.

The final work will be complete on Friday, leaving the gazebo ready for the public to enjoy. The gazebo is often used for functions in Onset, said Lorraine McDonald, co-chair of the Onset Beautification Committee. These include weddings, a band on the Fourth of July and Illumination Night. The gazebo is also decorated each year for Christmas.

“We’ve been trying to make these improvements for years, but we keep running into walls,” McDonald said.

The work was paid for through an anonymous donor, other smaller donations and fundraisers. Donations are still being accepted and should be made out to the OBA Beautification Team and mailed to OBA Office, PO Box 799, Onset, MA 02558.

The Onset Beautification Committee thanked Gibbs Roofing, Ikkela Electrical, Taylor & Sons and Olson’s Garden Center for their help improving the historic gazebo.
