7-Eleven reopens following gas pump crash

The 7-11 in East Wareham has reopened after an extensive cleaning was required following an accident that triggered the store’s fire suppression system.

On Sept. 15, a van backed into a gas pump at the business, which released sodium bicarbonate, a white compound used to fight fires.

Health Agent Bob Ethier informed the Board of Health on Wednesday that the substance coated the entire parking lot and most of the store’s interior.

While it’s nontoxic, the substance posed “an inhalation hazard for anybody there,” said Ethier.

A professional cleaning service was called in before the store was reopened.

“It’s never been so clean,” said Ethier.
