Bike run to help Wareham firefighter battling brain tumor on Sept. 24

Sep 22, 2017

A bike run fundraiser on Sept. 24 will help offset the medical costs of a longtime Wareham firefighter recently diagnosed with a brain tumor.

David Wahlstrom, who has been on the department for roughly 20 years, received the life-threatening diagnosis last week after a visit to Tobey Hospital, said Morgan, his daughter. He was then taken to Rhode Island Hospital for further evaluation. He underwent surgery on Sept. 16 for the tumor, which had been growing for some time, said Morgan. He was discharged on Sept. 19.

“Before the surgery, we were bawling, but he was so strong,” said Morgan. “He’s ready to fight for his life.”

Morgan said money from the bike run will help pay for chemotherapy and medical bills. The run starts at 11 a.m. and the ride departs Shenanigans in Wareham, located at 2691 Cranberry Highway.

Riders will go to the Parrot Bar in Bourne and return to Shenanigans. After the ride, music, food and a raffle will be held at Shenanigans. The band Classic Trax will perform at 3 p.m. Cost is $20 per ticket. All proceeds will benefit Wahlstrom and his family.
