Children who hadn’t yet taken their first steps were welcomed at Thursday’s story walk held in the Wareham Free Library. There, organizers said it’s never to early to get kids interested in reading.

“Reading to children starting at an early age is so important,” said Donna Noonan, Wareham Public Schools administrator for Literacy and Early Childhood Coordination. “Tonight is all about promoting literacy and encouraging families to check out their local library.”

Sponsored by the school district’s Office of Beyond School Time, the event was geared towards preschool and kindergarten students. It featured a self guided reading tour in the library. Giant pages from the book “It’s Pumpkin Time!” were set up throughout the library for parents and kids to read.

Additionally, pumpkin-themed activities were set up in the children’s room, helping to promote math skills. Kids could measure a large pumpkin using yarn and arrange a series of and smaller ones by size in addition to other tasks.

More than two dozen children arrived for the event, said Noonan, adding she was glad to see such a good turnout.

“When parents read to their children at a young age it sets them up for success when they head off to school,” she said.
