Selectmen awarded a valued member of the Wareham community with a certificate of recognition at Tuesday’s meeting, thanking her for giving those who live in Wareham “a smile, a hello, a hot meal and a little chit chat.”

Cheryl Johannessen, the nutrition manager at Old Colony Elder Services, was commended for more than nine years on the job and for her work as the coordinator of Meals on Wheels in Wareham. Meals on Wheels delivers meals five days a week. This past Friday, they delivered 165 meals to Wareham residents.

The certificate, which was read at the meeting, thanked Johannessen for investing in “the community’s most vulnerable members,” bringing meals to shut-ins and those with disabilities and delivering almost 3,500 meals last month.

Johannessen said she hopes to get the word about about the need for volunteers at Meals on Wheels, which is currently seeking drivers. The drivers are reimbursed 53.5 cents per mile and are needed Monday through Friday. To sign up, contact Johannessen at 508-291-3100 ext. 6514.
