Elementary students squeal for Thanksgiving balloon parade

Second graders presented their own version of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Wednesday, with 50 balloons floating down the hallways of John W. Decas Elementary School.

Teacher Melissa Dionne started the parade four years ago. Second grade students each create a design for the balloon and the best ones are selected, for a total of five balloons made by each class. They start with helium balloons and add tissue paper and foam to bring the designs to life.

"This year it came out amazing," Dionne said. "They keep getting better and better."

The rest of the students lined the hallway, applauding and admiring at the designs of the second grade students. Kindergarten students look forward to when they will be old enough to create their own balloons, Dionne said.
