Wareham Selectmen approve Lukey Community Park, Wareham Free Library donations
Selectmen approved donations from two individuals and three businesses for a revamped Lukey Park Playground and a $3,120 donation from the Friends of the Wareham Free Library.
Located on Hathaway Street, the park, which had fallen into disrepair, was rebuilt this fall with the help of volunteers and $175,000 of Community Preservation Act funds.
The effort was spearheaded by Renee Moniz and Amanda Bell-Smith. The first phase of the park is complete and features play equipment for children ages 2 to 12. The park isn’t complete yet and plans call for the addition of a basketball court and a walking trail. Both are slated to be installed this spring. A dedication ceremony was held on Nov. 11.
The board approved donations from: Franks Butcher Shop & Specialty Deli, Partridge Snow & Hahn, Counselors-at-law, Amanda Bell-Smith, Joan Lukey-Stevenson and A.D. Makepeace Co.
The Friends of the Wareham Free Library raised $3,120 through its many fundraisers and the money will go towards paying a research assistant. Hired this fall, the assistant is currently working two hours a week.
