Wareham man found guilty of assaulting ex-girlfriend

A Wareham man has been sentenced to serve two years in the House of Corrections after being found guilty of assaulting and threatening his ex-girlfriend, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz announced on Dec. 18.

On Dec. 15, after a four-day trial, a Plymouth County jury convicted Joseph Bump, 37, on three counts of assault and battery, and one count of threatening to kill. The jury acquitted Bump on nine counts of attempted murder and two counts each of kidnapping and restraining order violations. At sentencing, Plymouth Superior Court Judge Gary Nickerson sentenced Bump to serve two years in the House of Corrections, to be followed by three years of probation from and after his sentence.

On Aug. 24, 2014, a woman reported to the Wareham Police Department that Bump physically assault her during the course of their relationship. She told police that on different occasions Bump struck, kicked, punched or put out lit cigarettes on her body.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague prosecuted the case, which was investigated by Wareham Police Department.
