Duke University dean tapped as MLK Jr. Community Breakfast keynote speaker

A Wareham High School graduate who currently serves as senior associate dean for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences Office of Technology Services at Duke University has been selected as the keynote speaker for the 10th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Breakfast.
Each year, the event attracts a couple hundred people, including many community leaders, who honor students that have done hard work inside and outside of school.
The event is held in the Wareham Unit of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford, located in the former Hammond School in Onset.
Speaker Edward Gomes Jr. oversees information technology planning, services, resource allocation (staff and finances) and integration for more than 70 departments, programs and institutes at Duke University.
“Mr. Gomes’ accomplishments are inspirational, and we look forward to hearing his address to the youth of our community,” said Wareham Unit Director Ken Fontes.
The breakfast recognizes students selected by the staff of each of Wareham’s schools, including Upper Cape Technical Regional High School in Bourne and Bishop Stang High School in Dartmouth, and the Gleason Family YMCA and Boys & Girls Club.
The breakfast will be held on Jan. 15 at 9 a.m. at the Boys & Girls Club in the Hammond School in Onset.
After a breakfast prepared by caterer “Big Daddy’s Chef on Fire!”, principals from each of the town’s schools, and representatives from other organizations, will introduce their selections for the Martin Luther King award.
The awards go to students who embody the spirit of the slain civil rights leader, and the keynote speaker, chosen by an organizing committee representing local business, clergy, youth organizations, and the School Department.
Students must also serve as role models for local youth. Tickets for the event cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for children.
