Wareham's Teddy Mathews headed to 'American Idol'

Jan 5, 2018

Wareham’s own Teddy Mathews is hoping to become the next 'American Idol.'

Mathews has a send off party planned later this month before leaving to perform on the musical-competition show. First launched in 2002 on Fox, the show ran for 15 seasons before being cancelled in 2015. Last year, it was announced the show was being revived on ABC.

Mathews is a 2015 graduate of Wareham High School. He is well known throughout town for performing at numerous functions, often singing the National Anthem. In 2010, he performed at Cape Idol as a 13 year old, raising funds for Bridgeview Montessori School scholarships.

Open auditions for the revamped American Idol were held this summer and fall across the country, including Sept. 8 in Boston.

'American Idol' premieres Sunday, March 11 at 8 p.m. on ABC. Judges will be Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.
