Antique car dealership receives approval to open in Wareham

A new business will be opening in Wareham this year, selling antique, collectible and special interest cars.

At the Selectmen meeting on Tuesday, Michael Fitzgerald was approved for a license to sell used cars from the property he owns at 367 Main St., located at the intersection of Main Street and Route 6. The building there has had various uses in the past, from apartments to a cranberry processing facility.

Now, it will be used to sell collectible cars. Fitzgerald, a former member of the Planning Board and Community and Economic Development Authority board, plans to transform the building, making it able to house cars.

Fitzgerald has a background in antique cars. He has been an antique car consultant and restorer for 40 years. He said he envisions having 20 vehicles in the building at a time. He already owns a car repair shop in Holbrook and uses mechanics from all over the country to work on his cars.

Most of the cars are from the 1930s to the 1970s, Fitzgerald said, and are valued from $10,000 to $200,000.

After his license was approved by selectmen on Tuesday, Fitzgerald said he hopes to open the business this summer. Most of the car sales will be done online or through word of mouth, he said.
