Wareham Lions Club holds pancake breakfast fundraiser, looks for new members
The Wareham Lions Club held a pancake breakfast at Marc Anthony's Pizzeria in Onset Sunday to raise money for the newly chartered club's donation fund.
"All money raised through the community goes back into the community," Rochester Lions Club member Lorraine Guy said. Guy, a "Guiding Lion" for the Wareham Club, assists its members during the first years of operation.
Marc Anthony's owner and Wareham Lions Club president Mark Salerno said employees Aaron Carlson and Chuckie Morrison volunteered to cook for the event.
Like its international counterpart, the Wareham Lions Club, which was chartered Oct. 1 of last year, is dedicated to community service. It uses its funds to donate eyeglasses, hearing aids, and scholarships, to send children to diabetes camps, and to complete service projects, Wareham Lions Club treasurer Deborah Smith said.
Wareham Lions Club secretary Lynn Pierce said the club is currently working to donate new glasses for patients in local nursing homes. It also donated money to the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
The club currently has 34 members and is looking to add more.
"Every new member brings in new ideas," Smith said.
The club holds dinners at different Wareham restaurants on the first Thursday of every month, said Donna Hagopian Barros, first vice president of the club. Anyone interested in becoming a member is invited to attend.
"That's our way of getting out into the community and introducing ourselves," Hagopian Barros said.
The next Wareham Lions Club dinner is at Longhorn Steakhouse at Wareham Crossing on Feb. 4. Call the club's membership chair, Dr. Steven Miller, at 508-295-7476 to RSVP.
